Our family and other stories

Not just any family, very true, this blog is all about our family, sharing our family’s amazing stories found as part of my genealogy research, it also directs you to my family history business.

I am a professional genealogist, with a Post Graduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies.

I have over 25 years research experience. See the Service page for my terms of business and an idea of what research I can do into your family. I also give talks on genealogy and can help guide you to research your own family.

I am a volunteer with the Society of Genealogists, hosting many Zoom talks, the events coordinator for the London Westminster and Middlesex Family History Society and a trustee of FIBIS (Families in British India Society).

Associate member of AGRA from Aug 2020. (Association of Genealogists & Researchers in Archives). Member of the Register of Qualified Genealogists.

The research I am doing takes many forms:

  • documents/photos handed down through family
  • family stories (not always reliable but often a good starting point)
  • subscriptions to genealogy websites (Ancestry, FindMyPast, The Genealogist, Scotland’s People, Essex Archives and Family Search)
  • ordering certificate from General Register Office in UK and similar services in other countries
  • books (really useful source especially the bibliography) including many a happy trip to the British Library
  • Online newspapers – in particular the Singapore Library who have scanned and indexed many Malay newspapers
  • The Society of Genealogists – attended many courses and spent many a happy hour using their amazing resources!
  • Google (of course)

  1. Dear Karen – I was going to message you via Ancestry but the site seems not to be working properly today. I just discovered listing for your Light tree and would love to have access to it if you are willing.
I have the Lights in my tree, though never had the good sense to split the family lines into separate trees so everyone merges into everyone else. Most happy to give you access to my overgrown tree if you wish. I have long tried unsuccessfully to discover more about E. Perois who William Light married in 1821 in Londonderry. Even her name is a mystery .. and her (reportedly) “tragic death”.
